From Chaos to Calm: How to Stay Present on Your Wedding Day

This is the most important day of a couples' lives. They should not be nervous and I am here to help calm those nerves.

Your wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions, details, and expectations. With so much happening all at once, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and miss out on the magic of the moment. As a wedding officiant, I’ve witnessed countless couples get caught up in the small stuff, worrying about timelines, flowers, or whether the ring bearer will actually walk down the aisle. I always remind my couples that their day is about celebrating love—not perfection. Let’s explore some practical ways to keep calm, soak in the joy, and truly experience every moment.

One of the best pieces of advice I give to my couples is to create intentional pauses throughout the day. Whether it’s a few deep breaths before walking down the aisle or a quiet moment together during cocktail hour, these pauses allow you to take it all in. I once had a couple who planned a private first look in a quiet garden just to share a few words before the ceremony. That simple moment became one of their favorite memories. Communicate with your vendors ahead of time to plan these breaks into your timeline—they truly make a difference!

Another key tip is to delegate responsibilities. You’ve put in the work for months—now it’s time to let others help. Whether it’s a trusted friend, a family member, or your planner, having someone else manage last-minute details frees you to enjoy your day. One couple I worked with even gave each bridal party member a small role, like managing guest questions or keeping the music list on track. They felt more relaxed knowing everything was covered. Remember, your only job is to be present and in love.

Perspective is everything. Instead of chasing perfection, focus on the memories you’re creating. Trust me, guests remember your happiness, not the minor hiccups. I’ve seen couples burst into laughter when the wind caught the veil or when the flower girl decided halfway down the aisle that she’d rather nap. These unplanned moments made their day more authentic and unforgettable. Embracing imperfections with grace makes your love story even more genuine.

Lastly, stay connected with your partner throughout the day. After the ceremony, I always encourage couples to take just five minutes alone—away from the guests and the noise. Holding hands, sharing a quick hug, and reflecting on the commitment you’ve just made grounds you in the moment. One couple told me it was the best advice they received because it helped them pause and appreciate what the day was truly about. Stay present, stay grateful, and let love lead the way.
